Sustainability Education

SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION: SUSTAINABLE FOOD AND CLEAN ENERGY NEGOTIATION SIMULATIONS

For many years, Earth Day Initiative has worked with schools to bring sustainability education directly into the classroom.  We have placed hundreds of indoor gardens in classrooms across the country, which allow students and teachers to grow food right in the classroom at any time of year, and we have provided detailed lesson plans and resources to teachers who want to educate their students about sustainable food and gardening and help grow those resources in their own communities.

Our latest iteration of our sustainability education program is focused around our negotiation simulations, which place students and educators into the roles of stakeholders trying to solve hypothetical sustainability challenges around sustainable food and clean energy.  Stakeholders negotiate together to find solutions to the problem given various constraints and goals that each stakeholder brings to the table. It's a really fun way to learn about sustainable and healthy food issues facing certain communities in New York City while also building communication skills and experiencing what it might be like to grapple with these issues in a real world context. The toolkit is free for schools and community organizations and can also be a fun employee engagement exercise for offices to undertake. Get in touch with us for a free digital copy of the toolkit or to schedule a free virtual session with our team to run the negotiation with your students at the contact information below.

A primary goal of the program is to educate students about the vast array of sustainable careers, so if you work in a sustainable industry and would like to support the program by leading a workshop, volunteering, or otherwise engaging with us, please get in touch.
